From time to time, in temporal affairs, when things grow desperate, there appears a leader who, by sterling dint, would inspire a weary people towards a revival of drooping spirits.
In many such instances, history records that such leaders have been women. Names the like of Hatshepsut, Cleopatra, Jeanne d'Arc, Nzinga, Jhansi Ki Rani abound, if one cares to delve into the annals of time.
To such illustrious list I make bold to add our own Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who, by her graceful but resolute approach to politics, has shown that we, of multi-ethnic Trinidad and Tobago, can, if we put our hearts into it, forge a unity to defeat the negativity that has long confounded and stymied us; and that we can so do without reverting to acrimony and violence.
Thus, at present, of all prospective national leaders, she and she alone possesses the qualities vital to engendering democracy in Trinidad and Tobago - the ability to fashion a workable platform for mutual trust by engaging even her opponents in straightforward conversation as to what has to be done to make this place a better one for our children.
I know full well that, while one may lead the horse to the pond, one may not make it thereof drink, yet, I hope these my words so stir the minds of hearts of my fellow Trinbagonians, that enough of them shall move to stain their fingers to ensure that, when the parson sounds the knell, Kamla shall prevail.
It's what our children expect...therefore what them we owe.
