Jack Warner filed a lawsuit Friday against former prime minister Basdeo Panday over statements that Panday has consistently made regarding the alleged lack of accountability by Warner for over $30 million.
Panday claims that Warner received the funds on behalf of the United National Congress (UNC) for expenditure in the 2007 general election and has failed to account for how it was spent.
The Chagunas MP and current UNC chairman has always denied the claims but has never taken the matter further.
On Friday his lawyers filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction for Panday to refrain from making malicious statements against him.
Panday announced on Friday that he will run as an independent candidate against Warner in Chaguanas West in the May 24 general election.
He told reporters while he supports the UNC, he cannot support Warner so he is running to make sure that Warner is not re-elected.
Warner won the highest number of votes among opposition MPs in the 2007 general election, winning 11,140 votes, which was 62 per cent of the popular vote. In that election Panday got 8,428 votes in Couva North which he had represented since 1976. The PNM and COP candidates together got 9,658 votes.
