Integrity Commission probing Guanapo church

The new Integrity Commission (IC) is investigating a controversial church at the Heights of Guanapo that is linked to Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

That has been confirmed by Devant Maharaj, chairman of the Indo-Trinbago Equality Council (ITEC) who had lodged a compliant with the IC before the new commission took office.

The Guanapo probe is among four that ITEC had raised with the commission.

“The Indo-Trinbago Equality Council received four letters dated March 23, 29 and 31 from the newly-appointed Integrity Commission, indicating that four of its several complaints have received the attention of the Integrity Commission and that in fact investigations into these complaints have begun,” Maharaj said Tuesday.

ITEC other complaints include a request for investigations into concerns that Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s violated the Integrity in Public Life Act (2000) and was subject to criminal prosecution in relation to the 2008 Judicial Committee of the Privy Council Appeal No 30.

That's the matter related to a controversial affidavit by Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu bakr.

Another relates to allegations involving the Minister of Finance surrounding the CL Financial bailout package. ITEC had also asked for the IC to investigate:
  • the Ministry of Culture’s secret scholarships
  • the Commissioner of Police for allowing PNM supporters to meet in Woodford Square during a no-confidence motion in Patrick Manning
  • the Tobago House of Assembly (THA)’s alleged provision of land to the Spiritual Baptist Shouters, but not Hindus
  • the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for allegedly telling staff to attend a political meeting
