A report in the Newsday newspaper Monday says Jack Warner is suing Basdeo Panday for libel.
The report stated that the Chaguanas MP's lawyer, Om Lalla, has sent a pre-action protocol letter dated March 4 to Panday at his home at Brian’s Gate, Palmiste in south Trinidad.
It quotes the letter as stating: "You are the intended defendant, being a former Prime Minister, former Leader of the Opposition United National Congress and being a Member of Parliament for Couva North."
The claim is "for libel and slander arising from words uttered and published...on diverse occasions commencing on August 10, 2009", the paper reported.
The paper stated that Panday has confirmed that he has received the letter and quotes him as saying that he has passed it to his lawyers.
Warner had planned to take legal action against Panday last year and had met with British attorney Allan Newman and attorney Anand Ramlogan to discuss legal action against Panday.

He decided against the action at that time but reserved his rights in the matter after some members of the UNC appealed to him to back off on the lawsuit.

The issues related to the original libel matter surfaced again during the recent UNC internal election in which Warner won the post of chairman of the party and again when Panday refused to recognize Warner as the opposition Chief Whip.
