The leader of the Congress of the People (COP) wishes Mervyn Assam all the best in his new role as a UNC Senator.
Winston Dookeran told the Trinidad Guardian Tuesday Assam was not a member of the COP executive member and COP's council did not have to have any discussions on the matter.
Assam was a COP candidate in the 2007 general election; he ran against Patrick Manning in San Fernando East. But he told reporters he remained a lifetime members of the UNC and accepted the senatorial appointment in that capacity.
Dookeran explained that Assam's situation is different from the case of former opposition senator, Sharon Gopaul-McNichol, who was fired as COP deputy leader when she accepted Basdeo Panday's offer to join the opposition team in the Senate.
