"I have nothing to hide": Bahadoorsingh

UDeCOTT deputy chairman Dr Krishna Bahadoorsingh has nothing to hide and nothing to worry about.

Bahadoorsingh made the statement to the Trinidad Express in response to a letter written by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar to the Integrity Commission about a $20 million roadway that gives access to a private housing development owned by Bahadoorsingh.

He claimed that the charges are "groundless" adding that "Kamla is a politician and a good one, so she will grab at anything to advance her cause."

Bahadoorsingh was head of Westmoorings Ltd, which was responsible for building the housing complex in the 1980s. He said the road was built on the basis of a contractual promise made by the People’s National Movement (PNM) and that the road works was part of the government’s financial obligation to his company.

"We were invited by the then government under Frank Barsotti, the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, and we were given the contract. A few years later the contract was stopped because of the lack of money," he said.

Bahadoorsingh explained that in stopping the contract, the Chambers government agreed to install a sewer system into the development and to design and build the Edinburgh Boulevard.

"There was no continuity of that work from one Government to the next. I could have sued the government at that point for failure to perform, but I did not," he told the paper.

He said the new Manning administration agreed to keep the promise of the Chambers government and built the road.

"If Kamla Persad-Bissessar is looking at me, she looking in the wrong direction...But there is no love in war and politics. I think she is attempting to target the rest of the UDeCOTT board for political leverage, but she is looking in the wrong direction," Bahadoorsingh told the Express.

People it just goes to show why people get into office, I would be damn blunt here, they get there to fix themselves and the sooner we all understand this, the sooner we become developed. Hey, corruption is a nasty stain, use what you like it cannot be cleaned. What needs to understand is that when we elect persons to serve, they must act in our interest, not in the interest of the financiers and power brokers. I would advocate for a new type of corruption, wait nah man, you eh even hear what ah saying, what i mean is that when we vote, we must expect a kick back, we must demand that our roads get paved, our drains cleaned, our garbage picked up, our community has recreation facilities. So I hope that others can join me in this type of corruption, I want plenty kick backs for my vote, WHAT DO YOU WANT???
