Major aftershock rattles devastated Haiti

A major 6.1-magnitude aftershock hit Haiti Wednesday, shaking buildings and sending people from the nation's capital fleeing into the streets just over a week after a devastating earthquake.

There have been no reports of additional damage or injury from the original quake that has killed more than 200,000 and left nearly two million homeless.

There have been previous aftershocks from the since last week's 7.0-magnitude quake, with most ranging in magnitude from 4.0 to 5.0, but Wednesday's aftershock has been the strongest.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that Wednesday's aftershock has the potential to cause major damage.

CBC meterologist Johanna Wagstaffe said serious shaking would have been felt up to 200 kilometres away from the centre.
