Maha Sabha boss endorses Kamla

Kamla Persad-Bissessar has got the endorsement of the leader of Trinidad and Tobago's largest Hindu body - the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS).

In an interview with reporters on Thursday night, SDMS Secretary General Sat Maharaj said, "I want to give my blessings to Kamla because I believe she is on the right track and I think there is time for change in the Opposition politics, time for change in the national politics."

He said he considered himself host to the Siparia MP, who is running for the leadership of the United National Congress (UNC), since she was holding a meeting in the SDMS school in Tunapuna.

Maharaj also made it clear that he doesn't belong to any political party. One of the SDMS executive members, Devant Maharaj, was a candidate for the Congress of the People (COP) in the last general election and the SDMS radio station, Jagriti, devoted a tremendous amount of resources to the COP campaign.

He said his support for Persad-Bissessar is in his private capacity and that he was not speaking on behalf of the Hindu organization.

He said Maha Sabha members who are eligible to vote Sunday "are free to make their choice...the membership must decide that if Basdeo Panday...is no longer capable in leadership."

Persad-Bissessar is a Hindu but has always presented herself as a national leader and in all her speeches she has asked people to join her and vote for her on the basis of her commitment to serving everyone, regardless of race or religion.

At a rally in Penal Friday night, she began her speech with a Hindu prayer, the universal Gayatri Mantra.
