Kamla, Warner score landslide victory in UNC election

Kamla Persad-Bissessar is the new leader of the United National Congress (UNC). Ramesh L. Maharaj was the first to concede defeat in Sunday's internal election and said there is going to be a new leader and new executive.

He said the members of the party have spoken and he is ready to work with the new leader. He said the party voted for change and the promise that the new leader would take the party to government.

Maharaj said he hopes that the new leadership keeps that promise and he pledged to help that happen. Maharaj said he will work with the new leader and will do everything that he can to help Persad-Bissessar win the next general election.

He said he is unhappy with the divisiveness in the campaign and said he hopes it would never happen again.

Persad-Bissessar did not immediately celebrate victory. She told media that she was happy with the trend so far but she would wait until later.,

The early trends showed a clear advantage for Persad-Bissessar as leader and Jack Warner for chairman. And it stayed that way, giving each of them a landslide victory.
