Warner wants to know why 1800 names were deleted from UNC membership list

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner says the United National Congress (UNC) must explain why it deleted 1,800 names from the revised list of members eligible to vote in the January 24, most of them from his Chaguanas West constituency.

"The list contains the names of 1,800 bonafide members of the party who have been deleted from the preliminary list of voters. I have written to the chairman of the membership committee, Kelvin Ramnath, to have the names included in the revised list," he told reporters when he showed up to file nomination papers Monday.

He said although most of the deletions are from his constituency he will still win.

"I would not even vehemently protest. I can go to the polls without these names and still win and get a new executive. They can do what they want. A person is no longer elected by race, it is all about performance," he said.

"If it was about race, I would be at Balisier House," he said.

He again made it clear that he is supporting Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar for leader because she is the only one "who has the capacity to unify all the opposing forces in this country to one level."

He also commented on a statement last year suggesting that he had a file on Persad-Bissessar.

"I made a foolish statement at a meeting in Rio Claro, but that was all political banter. I am no police to have any files on her," he said.
