People prefer Warner over Panday: Ryan poll

The RYAN poll in the Trinidad Express suggests that United National Congress (UNC) leader Basdeo Panday fares poorly against his percveived opponent, Jack Warner.

The poll was conducted before Warner disbanded the Ramjack group, so people were asked whether they would support Ramjack members Warner, Ramesh L. Maharaj or Winston "Gypsy" Peters against the incumbent leader.

The result was overwhelminly in Warner's favour, even from Indo-UNC members.
This is what the results suggest:
  • Warner - 30 per cent
  • Panday - 14 per cent
  • Maharaj - 11 per cent
  • Peters - 02 per cent
A majority of 44 per cent did not express a preference. Pollsters went further as asked the question of preference to Indians.

The result was still in Warner's favour. Panday got 19 per cent and Warner was at 32 per cent, well ahead of Maharaj, who scored 14 per cent.

What the results seem to suggest is a changing attitude to ethnic politics with voters making choices based on an individual's performance, not ethnicity.
