So far only Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj is running against the incumbent, Basdeo Panday, who has the support of several current UNC Members of Parliament.
Maharaj has no such support and one member of the now-disbanded Ramjack group is supporting Persad-Bissessar although she is not a candidate.
Mayaro MP Winston "Gypsy" Peters is fully behind Persad-Bissessar and has said if she decides to run against Panday and Maharaj he would actively campaign for her.
Chagunas West MP Jack Warner isn't taking that route. He has stated that the membership of the party will decide and he is looking forward to working with whoever wins. He wants "the best person" to win.
Persad-Bissessar is getting a flood of emails, phone calls and personal visits from friends, activists and advisers who are telling her that she can win in a race against Panday and Maharaj.
But she is still undecided. She is expected to announce on Saturday whether she will sit this out or take the plunge.
Peters summarizes best what many people are saying. In a comment to the Trinidad Express he said now is the time for her to take on Panday.
"If she doesn’t have the courage to battle him now then she is forever doomed and she would never be able to battle him again. Go for it lady, because you are capable, go for it," he said.
