Winston "Gypsy" Peters said Wednesday United National Congress (UNC) Leader Basdeo Panday remains as relevant to Trinidad and Tobago politics as Nelson Mandela is to the politics of South Africa and the world.
But the Mayaro MP said the former prime minister's role must not be the leader of the party but as a special adviser and "elder statesman" whose political experience would be invaluable to the party and the country.
Peters said he respects Panday and noted that Panday himself has said on many occasions that he wants to retire from active politics. He noted that it is clear that Panday is not the person who can return the party to Whitehall.
Peters, who is a member of the Ramjack dissident group within the UNC was speaking on morning radio in Trinidad with journalist Hansly Adjodha. He said Panday knows that it is time to go. "He told me he is no longer politically attractive," Peters said.
Peters said in the 2007 general election Panday told tens of thousands of supporters that would be his last election.
The MP wondered why, in spite of Panday's own statements, he continues to insist on leading the party when he knows that his presence in that role would prevent a victory against the People's National Movement (PNM).
