T&T records first suspected Swine Flu death

The Ministry of Health in Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed the country's first suspected Swine Flu death, saying furrther tests are being conducted on the victim, who was a patient at the San Fernando General Hospital.

The ministry said Tuesday a second patient died due to acute respiratory symptoms, but that patient tested negative for the virus.

The statement said there are five other patients at the hospital who might be infected with the Swine Flu. It did not give details about the patients other than to say the ministry will be closely monitoring the situation and would keep the public informed once they get further updates.

Local media reports say some areas of the hospital have been put under quarantine and that staff are wearing face masks as a precaution.

The latest the World health Organization (WHO) report on Oct. 4 stated that worldwide there have been more than 375,000 laboratory confirmed cases and over 4500 deaths have been reported to WHO.

In the Americas region, which includes the Caribbean, there have been 3,292 deaths. That's the highest death toll among all regions.
