Gopeesingh calls for unity to unseat PNM

As I wish the country Happy republic Day, I urge us all to reflect on where we are as a people and a nation, and realise that more than ever, in our young democracy, we are under threat.

Republicanism for us was supposed to be our final rejection of Colonial relics that stunted our Independence and kept us in bondage to a system where we were not free as citizens to truly govern our country.

We have, as a young nation, made bold strides towards our assertion of Independence and our identity but we have sadly reached a stage where this is under threat.

We know as a people the threats the PNM administration of the day poses to us as a nation, a people and individuals.

Never before in our history have our country and people been assailed with social, political, economical and individual maladies like crime, murders, corruption among Government and State officials, poverty, economic recession, unemployment, disastrous health care, a breakdown in family life the systematic undermining by Government of every arm of independence in its pursuit to create a real dictatorship, wanton political and racial discrimination-in short the destruction of our nation and its core values as we know it.

It was not always that way.

Under the UNC administration our country progressed miles and that dream of true prosperity and a restoration of the utopian paradise is still within reach of this country.

All it takes is for the country to unite and band together to get rid of the common evil that is the PNM regime.

I urge all to think of this on this happy day for our nation, for, in the words of two of America's greatest Presidents: John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

Abraham Lincoln: "It has been said of the world's history hitherto that might makes right. It is for us and for our time to reverse the maxim, and to say that right makes might."

Thank you and God bless you and yours.
Dr Tim Gopeesingh MP, Caroni East
