The T&T Government and the Caricom Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (Caricom Impacs) signed an agreement Wednesday to establish the headquarters for Caricom Impacs in Trinidad and Tobago.
Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon, who signed on behalf of the government, said the agreement sets out the legal status, privileges, immunities and operating conditions under which Caricom Impacs would operate.
“The region is faced with several threats which include illicit drug trade, the proliferation of illegal firearms, money laundering, corruption, criminal deportees and the threat of terrorism,” Gopee-Scoon said.
She said the ramifications of crime are “far-reaching" and Caricom has recognized an urgent need for a co-ordinated regional strategy to address security threats faced by member states.
Caricom Impacs was formed following the 2005 CARICOM summit in St Lucia in 2005.
