Murder suspect shot dead; T&T murder toll reaches 282

One of the men questioned by police in connection with the murder of 10-year-old Tecia Henry in Laventille has been shot dead.

Police say they don't have a motive for the killing of Ricardo "Docs" McCarthy, 47, whom they described as a gang leader.

They told the Trinidad Express over the years many people have made unsuccesful attempts to kill McCarthy. The killing raises the country's homicide total for the year to 282.

The Express reported Tuesday that McCarthy's past was full of violence.

In 2005 his two-year-old daughter was injured in a shootout in Port of Spain in which he and his wife were injured. His daughter, Abina, is paralysed from the gunshot wounds.

In that same year McCarthy's son, Oba Jones, was shot dead. And in 2006, McCarthy's brother, Anthony, was shot dead on his way home from work.

Henry was reported missing on June 13. Her body was found four days later in a hole below an abandoned house a short distance from where she lived with her mother. An autopsy revealed she had been strangled.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning's comment on the murder was that it should not be taken at face value, which prompted an angry reaction from the girl's mother and the community.
