UNC Deputy Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced Friday that discussions towards a concord among political parties opposed to the PNM will begin next Tuesday, June 9, at 2 pm, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Port of Spain.
Persad-Bissessar will meet with Dr Kirk Meighoo, Political Leader of the Democratic National Assembly (DNA).
The Siparia MP is leading a delegation from the UNC's national exeutive that includes Deputy Chairman Vasant Bharath and General Secretary Fazal Karim. Meighoo will be accompanied by a delegation of DNA officials.
Persad-Bissessar has sent letters inviting leaders of other parties to meet for discussions on a joint opposition to the PNM.
In her letter, Mrs Persad-Bissessar said, “We believe that concord among all stakeholders is crucial not only to constructing the political momentum required to unseat the incompetent PNM regime but also to creating the co-operative spirit that will be required to rebuild our society and our nation from the ground up.”
Persad-Bissessar said the Leaders of the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), the Congress of the People (COP) and the Movement for National Development (MND) have orally acknowledged the letter and indicated their willingness to meet with the UNC committee.
She added that COP leader Winston Dookeran indicated that he would be out of the country for a while and would call her when he returns.
