Air Force one gets exclusive hanger in Trinidad

The Government of Trinidad & Tobago is spending TT$60 million for an upgrade at Piarco International Airport that includes three new hangers to accommodate the aircraft bringing heads of delegations to the Fifth summit of the Americas this month.

One of the new hangers would be for the exclusive use of Air Force One, the official aircraft of the President of the United States.

The Airports Authority decided on the upgrade because it concluded that the existing buildings formerly used by BWIA and, now Caribbean Airlines, could not accommodate any aircraft bigger than the L-1011, which BWIA operated on its route to London.

The facelift began earlier this year with Jusamco Pavers and Shanghai Corporation getting the contracts for the new construction and the other upgrades. The project is near completion and would likely be handed over to government next week, just days before the start of the conference.
