The President of the Oilfield Workers' Trade UNion, Cancel Roget, charged on Wednesday that a high ranking government official "within the cabinet" directed state-owned National Petroleum Limited (NP) to fire 68 workers at the fuel distribution company. Roget said it was because the workers are supporters of the opposition People's National Movement (PNM).
However, NP chairman Neil Gosine immediately denied the allegation. “That’s not true. There was no political victimisation, no directive from any Cabinet minister to issue termination letters,” Gosine told the Newsday newspaper.
“The Board never got any instruction from Cabinet to fire anyone. The management held hearings to verify who were legitimately absent from work which is why out of the 85 suspended workers, only 68 were fired,” Gosine said.
Roget told reporters the company fired the workers so it could hire others who are connected to the People's Partnership and said if the move was to teach workers and the union a lesson, it has failed.
