Ramayan was one of the country's most respected violinists and was one of the founders of the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) in 1964. He was honoured with the Hummingbird Bronze Medal in 1970 for his contribution to Indian Classical music.
Former government minister Kamalludin Mohammed told Newsday Saturday Ramaya was a person who worked hard to preseve and develop culture in Trinidad and Tobago.
“We have lost an icon and a pioneer. Someone who was well respected, a musician and a teacher who dedicated his life towards culture in this country,” Mohammed said.

Ramaya was born in 1919 in the Forres Park Sugar Estate of Claxton Bay, where his parents worked as indentured labourers. He learned to play the violin without professional help and became known for his wizardry with the instrument.
