Justice Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona to be new T&T President

Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona will be the new President of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and Commander-in-Chief of the country's armed forces.
He is the nominee for the government for election as the country's Head of State. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made the announcement on Monday. 

When she revealed Carmona's name members of the cabinet applauded heartily.

"Fellow citizens, I have the honour and immense pride to have advised his excellency Prof George Maxwell Richards to advise the honorable Chief Justice Mr Ivor Archie and to advise the honourable Leader of the Opposition Dr Keith Rowley that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago formerly proposes the name of Mr Justice Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona, Senior Counsel, as the nominee for the post of President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,"  Persad-Bissessar said.


Before making the announcement, she expressed "deepest gratitude" to the sitting president, Max Richards, for having served the country "with honour and dignity".

Earlier in the day she met with the leader of the Opposition, members of her coaliton and her parliamentary caucus.

The official nomination day is Tuesday and the election is on February 15.

Carmona is a High Court Judge at the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and a judge-elect of the International Criminal Court.

Anthony Carmona was born on 7 March 1953. The Fyzabad, Trinidad native attended the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School between 1973 and 1983. 


In 1989, he became a Senior State Attorney. From 1994 to 1999, he was first Assistant then Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions. 

From 2001 to 2004, he was an Appeals Counsel at the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha. In 2004, he was appointed a High Court Judge at the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago.

On 12 December 2011, he was elected as a judge of the International Criminal Court. He won the office in the first ballot in the Assembly of States Parties with 72 of 104 votes with 70 votes needed.
