Justice Anthony Carmona is the new president of Trinidad and Tobago. He was the only nominee for the post and no vote was needed from the electoral college of parliament.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Wade Mark declared Carmona elected in keeping with Section 31 of the constitution and Regulation 9 (1) B of the rules of the Electoral College of 1976.

Carmona will become the fifth president of Trinidad & Tobago when he is inaugurated on March 18 at a public ceremony at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at four in the afternoon. Chief Justice Ivor Archie will administer the oath of office.
Carmona succeeds President Max Richards, 82, who will demit office on march 17. Richards, who is out on the country on vacation, served two five-year terms. Each of his three predecessors also served two five-year terms.
