Securities bill gets unanimous support on HOR

The opposition joined the government Monday to unanimously pass the Securities Bill 2012 in the House of Representatives. It was the final act before the legislature adjourned for the holidays.

The Bill required a special majority of 26 members, which the government side had. However, in addition to getting the expected support from the 29 MPs in the governing coalition opposition members present also voted in favour.

The Securities Bill is aimed at strengthening the regulatory and supervisory capacity of the securities industry. It had to be passed before the end of the year in order to ensure that T&T would continue to be listed by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions.
