The People's National Movement (PNM) had been trumpeting misinformation about the OPV arbitration matter, stating that the government has lost and would have to pay BAE Sytems $1.3 billion. A Scottish newspaper carried the same story but promptly corrected its error.
Rowley also said cancellation of the OPVs leaves T&T with no proper protection of its maritime borders. That's an argument that Ramlogan knocked down the day before at the post cabinet news conference noting that there is no empircal evidence to support the PNM's contention. Ramlogan said the reality is that crime has decreased.
Now the PNM is putting a different spin on the matter, saying the state got "lucky".
Opposition Leader Keith Rowley told reporters Friday that the government would have been hit with a TT$700 million bill if BAE had not sold the rejected boats to the Brazilian navy last December. "It was a slice of luck that Brazil bought the vessels," he said.
T&T won the matter and BAE Systems has agreed to pay the government $1.382 billion.
