PNM has problem with Tobago electoral list

The Tobago Council of the People's National Movement (PNM) told local media Wednesday it fears that someone is making an effort to rig the polls for the January 21, 2013 Tobago House of Assembly election "in favour of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP)."

The council held an emergency session in Scarborough Wednesday after which its education officer, Rennie Dumas, told the media the council cannot match a number of names on the electoral list with the addresses given.

"We have had results from that exercise and we have some findings, including the fact that some of the listed electors cannot be found, despite the most diligent search," Dumas told reporters.

The PNM said it has sent a letter to Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) chairman Norbert Masson.

"We are therefore seeking an opportunity to share with the EBC the results we have, the concerns that have arisen, all with the hope that identified problems can be afforded speedy attention and swift redress where possible," Dumas said.

For EBC figures show that the electorate for the election 46,084; In 2009 it was 42,623. There are 67 polling divisions for the 12 districts that make up the THA.

Dumas did not explain why he felt the alleged discrepancy was deliberate and in favour of the TOP. When reporters asked about it he said: "I would not want to discuss the EBC's capacity nor would I want to discuss the EBC's potential responses without first honouring our understanding with the EBC, that we would first share with them the details of our findings before we go public."

The PNM has started screening candidates for the election and expects to conclude the exercise before the end of the month. Nomination day is December 31.

So far it appears that it would be a two-way race in the election with the PNM, which had 8 seats in the last assembly, and the TOP, which held the other 4.
