Anti government sources are circulating this graphic on the Internet and suggesting that it has something to do with the budget and the change of VAT.
Unless the images, including the bills, are doctored it is clear that Hi Lo has increased the price of Bumble Bee tuna by $3.50 between September 16 and October 11 this year. That's almost 50 per cent within that time frame.
What is causing it?
That's a question for the management of the grocery chain and the supplier of the tuna. It certainly is not connected to the budget and the VAT issue because the VAT reduction is supposed to take effect on November 15, 2012. And in any case that is the list price before adding any tax.
Several other market factors may have contributed to the increase in price and consumers should be asking their grocery manager to explain. In addition, wise consumers shop around. If Hi Lo is the only supermarket doing this, then there is no need to buy this product at Hi Lo.
