More than 31,000 have applied for 5,000 positions of special reserve police (SRPs) and now National Security Minister Jack Warner is saying he would ask cabinet for approval to hire 10,000 SRPs.
In addition he wants to buy 100 motor cycles for the Police Service, in addition to the 300 vehicles he promised last week.
Cabinet has approved $289.6 million for for Warner's ministry to fight crime. The money is for vehicles and advanced IT equipment, among other things.
"I never expected that kind of response," Warner told local media. "I will ask Cabinet to consider seriously doubling the numbers."

Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams told the Express newspaper he too did not expect such an overwhelming response.
