CARICOM honours Kamaluddin Mohammed with highest regional award

Kamaluddin Mohammed
Former government minister and Caricom Ambassador Kamaluddin Mohammed is to be awarded the region’s highest award, the Order of Caribbean Community, during the Caricom heads of Government meeting in St Lucia, which begins Wednesday.

However Mohammed, fondly known by all as "Charch" will not be in St Lucia to receive the award. His son, Aleem, will collect the award and deliver a message on behalf of his father.

“Chach” was a founding member of the People's National Movement and served in several cabinet portfolios during his lengthy political career. His last formal assignment was as Caricom Ambassador during the Panday UNC administration

He is one of the founders of the regional integration, having worked with other leaders like former prime ministers Dr Eric Williams and Michael Manley of Jamaica and President Forbes Burnham of Guyana.

In accepting the honour, Mohammed expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the People’s Partnership Government for nominating him for the “prestigious honour.”

This is the third major honour handed to Mohammed in the past year. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies and was given the Order of Trinidad & Tobago, the nation's highest national award.
