Today the role of fatherhood is more important to the development of our nation than ever before. The role of some men in our society is under threat as many have abdicated their roles and responsibilities, leaving a gap in family structures.
To most families, fathers represent discipline and protection and they stand as the ones to whom children will turn to settle disagreements and help with difficult decisions.

To some, the father represents a first best friend, a sports coach and of course the one to whom a child will go to in moments of fright and fear. He brings a sense of safety and security to the home.
It is for this reason that I ask the nation's fathers to use this day to reflect on their roles and to consider how significant their responsibility is to ensure that their children develop personal strength and a sense of obligation to themselves to face the challenges that life holds for them.
Such responsibility was aptly described by Khalil Gibran when he wrote: "You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth."

As we all celebrate Father's Day therefore, let us appreciate the good fathers of our nation; support those who can do better, and remember the great ones who have passed on. To all of you proud fathers and families in Trinidad and Tobago, I send you my best wishes for a joyful, peaceful and happy Father's Day celebration.
May God Bless you all
