Police in Jamaica have detained a man in connection with the murder of Michelle Coudray-Greaves, the 39-year-old daughter of San Fernando mayor Marlene Coudray whose body was found Monday in a cane field.

Police have described the man as "a person of interest". They are doing some further investigations to determine if the man could be deemed a suspect.

Police believe Coudray-Greaves may have been killed elsewhere and dumped in a cane field in Montego Bay, which was about to be set on fire in preparation for harvesting.

Media reports have said the victim's estranged husband, Sean Greaves, is not a suspect. The couple's children live in Trinidad with their grand mothers, Marlene Coudray.

Coudray-Greaves, one of Coudray’s two daughters, disappeared on June 2, days after she returned to Jamaica after a vacation in Trinidad, where she spent time with her mother and her children.

She was a teacher at Cornwall College and lived at Cornwall Courts in Montego Bay.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar issued a statement Tuesday expressing sadness at Coudray’s loss. “The terror and pain of a parent to not only outlive her child but to bear such tragic last memories are unimaginable. As a mother and grandmother, I can only imagine the family's immense agony, she said.

The Leader of the Congress of the People (COP) also extended condolences. Prakash Ramadhar said, “We pray that Almighty Good will give you patience and strength at this difficult time. We hope that you will find some comfort, knowing that we all share in your grief and may Almighty God shower His blessings on you."
