THA Chief Orville London |
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the appointment of the team during a rally in Tobago. The members are Dr Hamid Ghany, Martin George and Christlyn Moore. Ghany is a constitutional expert and the other members are attorneys. In addition George is a columnist for one of the local newspapers.
The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary said he doesn't want to tell the Prime Minister who to appoint. However he said he has serious concerns about whether George and Moore can be impartial.
London made the comments in Port of spain at a luncheon hosted by the Trinidad Union Club. He spoke on the same matter the day before at another luncheon, hosted by the Rotary Club.
He said, “At least give members of the public the confidence that the members are impartial. They are so obviously biased. I am not casting aspersions on their integrity.”
London said the THA and Tobagonians were taken by surprise. “We would have liked committee members whose reputations are above reproach,” he added.
He said Moore worked “very closely” with the Attorney General and that George is well known for his “vicious attacks” on the THA.
The Guardian newspaper said it received an e-mail from George in response to London in which George said it is unfortunate there has been an attempt to try and turn the matter into a question of personalities on the committee and not on the issues. “Let us remain focused on the issue of the greater good and what is important and necessary for Tobago," the paper quoted him as saying.
“Even though persons may have different perspectives and opinions, once we are all working for the ultimate good of Tobago, then let’s get on with the job and work together to achieve this objective,” George added.
