The auspicious observance of Corpus Christi by Roman Catholics around the world commemorates a celebration of the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Here in Trinidad and Tobago, the Roman Catholic Church has faithfully celebrated this occasion with great efforts at embracing the national community, in sharing teaching, in guiding the young and in adopting the wisdom of elders in our society.
The annual celebrations have become a solemn reminder of how Jesus Christ brought sustenance and nourishment and restored the hope and faith of people. Perhaps therein lies the origins of our tradition of planting new crops, as God oversees and protects that which we plant to sustain ourselves.
On Corpus Christi, the message from the Church has remained constant and with the passage of time, has grown stronger, for a return to strong spiritual and moral values, and for a restoration of faith in God and self.
It is my hope, and indeed, the hope of my Government, that this message, as with messages from all religious leaders, will continue to reach out to the vulnerable, the wary and the despondent so that families and communities can learn greater balance in their strength of spirituality and their progress in a demanding world.
On this occasion, I wish the Roman Catholic community and indeed all citizens of our country a Happy and Holy Corpus Christi. I pray that we might use this occasion to re-inspire our own sense of hope in the future of our nation and in our personal lives.
May God richly bless you all.
