Nalini Dial: "Who do they think they are? They want to discipline me? Are they my mother and father?..." |
Nalini Dial is facing censure from her party - the Congress of the People (COP) - for posting what many people have said was an offensive comment about the death of the daughter of San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray.
Public Administration Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, who is a deputy leader of COP and the MP for San Fernando West hinted on Wednesday that Dial will have to face consequences from the party’s executive for her Facebook posting.
Seepersad-Bachan said Dial’s comments were "very unfortunate", adding that at a COP executive meeting on tuesday night the party condemned Dial's actions.
Coudray's daughter was killed in Jamaica and her body discovered on Monday night in a cane field in Montego Bay.
Dial is an animal rights activist as well as a COP loyalist who ran for the post of COP leader. In her Internet posting she suggested that the death of Coudray's daughter was God's punihment to Coudray for electrocuting dogs in San Fernando while she was CEO of the San Fernando City Corporation.
The city has had a long standing policy going back to the 1980s of euthanizing stray dogs.
Dial's comments has sparked angry reaction from many sources. UNC Chairman Jack Warner called the comments "disgusting" and Dial's own party has distanced itself from her comments.

"The executive members of COP have distanced themselves from Ms Dial’s statements and I think they would be taking it further with Ms Dial... the leadership of the party would be dealing with that matter,” Seepersad-Bachan said.
She said she had Coudray and her family in her prayers and added that she feels Coudray's pain. “We have been praying that Ms Coudray would continue to find the strength in this traumatic period of her life,” Seepersad-Bachan added.
However, Dial responded immediately, saying those who criticise her are “hypocrites.” The Guardian newspaper quoted her as saying that she is prepared to resign from the party rather than let her views be compromised.
Dial said she is not afraid of anyone. "Who do they think they are? They want to discipline me? Are they my mother and father? They can’t even discipline Anil Roberts but they want to discipline me,” she told the paper.

She added: "They used to call Ms Coudray all sorts of things and suddenly all of them are compassionate to her... all of them are just being hypocrites.
“I am fed up with these pretentious people. I thought I had joined a party which preached honesty but I cannot stand this kind of hypocrisy and deceit and I am prepared to resign,” she told the paper.
She said: “This country just cannot face the truth. It is my democratic right to express how I feel and other animal-rights activists also feel the same way.

“I maintain people will reap what they sow and they must be held accountable for their deeds. This is what the Bible teaches us and in this instance it just so happens that it is Ms Coudray.”
She claimed that some some COP members support her and "are also expressing the same sentiments as I do. It just so happens that I have gone public with my views and they have chosen not to,” she added.
