Dr Bhoe Tewarie |
Planning Minister Dr Bhoe Tewari made the announcement at Thursday's post cabinet media briefing. He said most of the country's construction will go to Local Government bodies under the new Planning and Facilitation of Development Bill.
He added that the new legislation would allow stronger enforcement of land development rules.
"About 80 per cent of the applications that now come to Town and Country Planning for approval involving simple approvals such as the construction of a house; we are going to devolve to Local Government," he said.
Tewarie also said there must be proper enforcement if the country is going to be zoned into residential construction, agriculture, light commercial and heavy industrial construction.
The minister also said Government would establish an authority to regulate and manage the process of land use and land development, so that the big developments will go to that authority for approval. There will be pliot projects for this in four zones - Port of Spain, San Fernando, Tunapuna/Piarco and Tobago.
