Ramdial stated that legislation safeguarding women from sexual abuse and domestic violence is long overdue.
She declared that “discrimination and violence against women cannot and will not be tolerated" by the People's Partnership government. "As such, measures outlined by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) are soon to be implemented”.
She stated, however, that legislation alone would not stop discrimination and violence.
The Minister also said government has recognised the need for homes and centres for battered and sexually abused women, and promised that plans to build these would soon to be implemented.
Ramdial also presented Mothers' Day gifts to mothers who attended the function.
