The president of the Senate, Timothy Hamel-Smith, ruled on Tuesday that opposition Senator Faris Al Rawi will have to face the Privileges Committee of Parliament.
The government asked for the ruling against the opposition senator for comments Al Rawi made on national television that were critical of the Chairman of a Senate Committee.
Hamel-Smith said Al Rawi would have to answer contempt charges before the committee.
He said, "It is the duty of all members to uphold the dignity of the Senate both inside and outside this Chamber. Having regard to the foregoing, I refer this matter to the Committee of Privileges of the Senate for its consideration and report and I so rule."
