Letter: Is David Abdulah playing political games?

David Abdulah today (Monday) announced his Party’s (MSJ) decision to withdraw its members from state boards. This as the MSJ confirms it will stay away from the People's Partnership second anniversary celebrations this Thursday.

Is Abdullah playing games with the People’s Partnership Government?

How can Abdullah resign as FITUN President because he is now Leader of the MSJ, a partner of the People’s Partnership Government, but remain on as OWTU’s general secretary. He did say that he cannot be president of Fitun and political leader of MSJ and be fair to both.

The OWTU and its President Ancil Roget have made their position clear. They have issued an ultimatum to Abdulah and the MSJ to leave the PP Government. They have been very anti PP and have continually threatened to “bring down the Government”

Abdullah cannot have it both ways. He must not be allowed to have one foot at the door of the Partnership and another against it. He must now decide whether he wants to be a full time partner of the Partnership or a full time trade unionist, opposed to the Government.

What we are witnessing here was similar to what occurred a few weeks ago with the COP and its Leadership.

However, it will appear that they have acknowledged what Political scientist Dr Hamid Ghany spoke about amidst speculation that Congress of the People (COP) leader Prakash Ramadhar would be fired from the People’s Partnership Government.

“No political party in a coalition Government under a parliamentary system can take an independent policy line in Cabinet or parliamentary matters.”

As with the COP, the MSJ is not upholding being part of the collective responsibility of the Partnership and that’s an untenable position to take. Such a position would gravely threaten the stability of the Government and would impact on the image of the partnership.

What is so baffling about the MSJ/Abdullah’s announcement is that while he has announced the party's decision to withdraw its members from state boards, he has not given up his seat as a Government Senator!
