Shakira sings anthem at opening of Americas Summit

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar joined Heads of State and Governments of the Americas for Saturday's opening ceremony of the Sixth Summit of the Americas at the Convention Centre in Cartagena, Colombia.

The two-day Summit brings together 31 hemispheric leaders to discuss Colombia’s chosen theme “Connecting the Americas – Partners for Prosperity”. The leaders are addressing the challenges of poverty and inequalities, citizen security, disasters and access to technologies.

The Summit commenced with a CEO meeting for business people hosted by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos along with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, and US President Barack Obama. 


The three Heads of State delivered statements touching upon current issues that affect North and South America, highlighting the topics of drug trafficking, poverty and employment rates.

The Summit was officially opened with performances by singer Shakira who delivered a powerful rendition of the Colombian national anthem alongside traditional Colombian dancers.
 The host, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, speaking at the opening ceremony urged his fellow leaders to be "partners for prosperity." 

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who is battling cancer, was unable to attend. His doctors advised him not to travel. Other leaders who did not attend were the PM opf Belize, Dean barrow, the President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega and Ecuadorean President, Rafael Correa.
