Prime Minister holds bilateral discussions with Canadian Prime Minister

Prime Ministe Kamla Persad-Bissessar with her Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar held talks on Saturday with her counterpart Stephen Harper prior to the start of a CARICOM-Canada meeting at the Sixth Summit of the Americas.

The agenda of their meeting included Trinidad & Tobago’s recent 80 million barrel oil find.

The Prime Minister was joined at the talks by Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine and Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister Dr. Surujrattan Rambachan.

Ramnarine told Harper several Canadian companies are already working in Trinidad & Tobago, namely PAREX, NICO and Voyager. Harper said he is anxious for Canadian companies to participate in the energy industry.

The Canadian leader said he was surprised that Trinidad and Tobago also had oil sands. Ramnarine advised Harper that it's estimated that T&T could have two billion barrels of oil in “oil sands" located in the south western peninsula of the Trinidad.

Canada holds the world’s third-largest reserves of crude oil and has the world's largest reserves of oil sands.

Harper also highlighted Canada's interest in enhancing its trade and economic relationship with CARICOM through a bilateral Trade and Development Agreement currently under negotiation. Three rounds of trade and development negotiations have taken place so far.

The leaders also discussed the Trade and Competiveness Project, which receives funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Persad-Bissessar told Harper she is pleased with relations between the two Commonwealth nations, particularly with respect to developing Trinidad & Tobago's health care system.

“We have been collaborating with the T&T based Canadian High Commission on all aspects of health care and a Canadian company has been identified to construct an oncology centre in Penal to treat with non-communicable diseases,” she said.

Harper congratulated the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago on celebrating 50 years of Independence. Persad-Bissessar welcomed his remarks and said Trinidad & Tobago is currently preparing for a state visit by Canadian Governor General David Johnston.
