Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan wants to know the full story behind the admittance of Cheryl Miller to the St. Ann's Hospital and why she was allowed to leave.
The minister told local media, "It would appear that somebody broke protocol...Someone has to be held accountable. Either the Ministry of Gender Affairs or the Ministry of Health. Someone with clout broke protocol."
Khan was reacting to the release on Friday of Miller from the hospital on the order of a High Court Judge.
She had been sent to the hospital after being removed from her desk at the Ministry of Gender and Youth Affairs at Tower D of the Waterfront Centre and placed directly into the St Ann's Hospital.
On Friday Justice Vashiest Kokaram held an emergency sitting of the court and granted Miller a temporary reprieve. He released her from the hospital for one week in the custody of her siblings.
The minister told the Express newspaper people will be fired from one of two Government ministries or the St Ann's Hospital if his investigation into the matter uncovers a breach of protocol in either how she was admitted or how she was released.
At the same time he said he would abide by ruling of the judge. He admitted that he personally cannot do anything to discipline anyone who might be guilty of a breach of the rules. However he will refer the matter to the Public Service Commission (PSC) to ensure someone pays for the breach.
Khan insisted that Miller is ill and needs further medical attention. He said doctors assured him that they would not let her leave the hospital.
"I asked them then what would happen if that matter ended up in court and they said even then they would not be able to discharge her because she was in the middle of her treatment," he told the paper.
"I even asked them if she could be released to family and they said no. So how could that no change to yes in a matter of minutes?" Khan wondered.
He said all the doctors involved in the matter would have to explain themselves. "While I have to abide by the court ruling, I want to know why she was allowed to leave. I want an explanation as to why they changed their position so quickly," he said.
He plans to submit the findings of his investigation to the head of the PSC for the commission to take "whatever action they deem fit".
