Fiery protest over police killing of 27-year-old man

Angry residents of Mount D'Or blocked the Priority Bus route Thursday in a fiery protect that created commuter chaos, causing traffic to back up all the way to Port of Spain.

It was the second protest of the day to draw attention to the killing of a 27 year old man who died at hospital after being shot by police.

On Wednesday police shot and killed the young man from Champ Fleurs. His name was Atiba Duncan, an avid footballer whose only crime, according to his friends, was that he smoked pot.

Police say otherwise. They described Duncan as a wanted criminal who was shot as police tried to arrest him on outstanding warrants for trafficking narcotics.

Police reports say three officers in a marked police SUV spotted Duncan spotted Duncan on the street. As they tried to apprehend him he ran off, pulled out a pistol, pointed it at officers and was about to squeeze the trigger.

Police said one officer fired a single shot that hit Duncan about his body; he died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope while being treated.

One witness told local media the police story is not true, claiming he was standing next to Duncan when police attacked him.

"Me and Atiba was liming...and we had lil weed and thing, and someone say the police coming..."

The witness said there was a scuffle between Duncan and a female police officer who used a sub-machine gun to shoot the man.

Duncan's girlfriend also told reporters, "He wasn't in anything. He worked construction, and he wanted a better life, and right now, I just feelin' to cry. I just can't face it."
