The founding leader of the Congress of the People (COP) said on Sunday the party would not be derailed by the ongoing debate over whether or not Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar should remove Marlene Coudray as San Fernando mayor.

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran made the comment after the party’s national council meeting insisted that it must have its way on the Coudray matter.

COP said unless it gets control over who is the mayor in San fernando it would adopt an independent position in Parliament and cabinet.

Dookeran told reporters, “I think the most important thing that came out...is that the COP has decided to move on...The party will not be de-railed.” he said.

Political leader Prakash Ramadhar later told reporters he knew what Dookeran discussed with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

“Mr Dookeran spoke with me...he had meetings with the Prime Minister. I am not at liberty to divulge the content of those meetings,” he said.
