The Sunday Express stated on Sunday in its series on constituency representatives that the community of Santa Magarita in Eastern Trinidad is in the constituency of St Augustine.
The story by reporter KIM BOODRAM quoted a resident of that community as saying he doesn't see the MP for the area, Prakash Ramadhar.
Here's what the paper reported:
"TOO many hats, too little time for the people. This was the consensus last week when the Sunday Express visited St Augustine, the constituency of Legal Affairs Minister and leader of the Congress of the People (COP) Prakash Ramadhar.
Most people said they respected their MP as an "intelligent" person, but they felt he had taken on too many other responsibilities to be able to perform effectively as an MP.
At Santa Margarita, one resident said:
"We don't see him at all. I really don't think it's because he doesn't care. He cares a lot about the people, and you can see that every time he speaks, but maybe it is that same caring that has led him to take on too much."
"Further on, at the Maynard household, they had never seen Ramadhar or spoken to him.
"I wouldn't say he's a bad MP, but honestly, I've never seen him around here," said one family member. "This is a large constituency, though."
"Santa Margarita is a horseshoe-shaped settlement of old and new residents and is more affluent in some parts." (Read the story in the EXPRESS)
However, we believe that the paper may have got it wrong because according to research by one of JYOTI's associates, Richard Thomas, Santa Magarita is not a part of the St Augustine constituency. According to Richard, it is located in the neighbouring constituency of Tunapuna, which is represented by Finance Minister Winston Dookeran.
