Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs issued a statement Thursday expressing concern over statements made on Wednesday by Minister of Justice Herbert Volney.
The minister, who is also the MP for St Joseph, called a media conference at which he described the police killing of Atiba Duncan as a homicide and called on Gibbs to suspend the officers involved pending an investigation.
Volney said, "This appears to be nothing short of a homicidal killing, I say this not just as a MP but as a former justice of the High Court one who has presided over hundreds of criminal trials.”
He added, “Those officers who are trigger hungry, will know to do so is nothing short of an abuse of power. You don’t kill a man in this country for being in possession of weed and that is the law.”

The CoP's release said that Gibbs has communicated with Minister of National Security Brigadier John Sandy requesting his intervention as the statements may have "far-reaching consequences" for the investigation that is currently underway.
"It is the Director of Public Prosecutions who is the person who makes the determination who will be charged for any offence. His determination is based on evidence and investigations carried out by an investigator," the release said.
