Survey suggests Moonilal, Rambachan, Warner will win re-election easily in UNC election

A poll by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) suggests that the top leaders in the United National Congress (UNC) will easily win re-election to the party's executive at next week's internal election.

NACTA did not provide the sample size, margin of error or other vital methodology used for its survey.

It said based on the findings Jack Warner, Roodal Moonilal and Suruj Rambachan would easily win. Warner is the UNC chairman; Moonilal and Rambachan are deputy leaders.

NACTA is also predicting that popular minister of the people Glenn Ramadharsingh will also easily win the post of Central Coordinator.

The agency said it also found little interest outside of the party in the election with many UNC members saying they won't vote.

A major focus of the election, according to NACTA, is the fight between Warner and his former political researcher, Attorney Ashvani Mahabir. Two others are also running but one of them has said he might withdraw.

There is also an interesting fight between two women for the vice chairman post, currently held by Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan. Khan is not running again in that position. He is seeking one of the three posts of deputy leader.

The toss up is between Lyndira Oudit, who is currently one of the three deputy leaders and Khadijah Ameen, chairperson of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation. The poll gives Ameen, who is running on Moonilal's slate, the advantage over Oudit.

NACTA suggests that there will also be an interesting race for the third Deputy Leader position between Khan and activist Sunil Ramjitsingh, who is running his own slate of candidates, with Khan having the advantage.

Moonilal is running with several incumbents who are expected to win easily, NACTAsaid.

A "newcomer", Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma, who is a seasoned politician who has served on the UNC's national executive before, is running for the post of Party Organiser, which he is likely to win easily.

Based on NACTA's poll the 2012 executive would look similar to the outgoing one. Its top positions would be:
  1. Kamla Persad-Bissessar - Political Leader (post not being contested)
  2. Roodal Moonilal - Deputy Leader
  3. Suruj Rambachan - Deputy Leader
  4. Dr Fuad Khan - Deputy Leader
  5. JackWarner - Chairman
  6. Khadijah Ameen - Vice Chairman
  7. Chandresh Sharma - Party Organiser
  8. Glenn Ramadharsingh - Central Coordinator
The other positions would be retained by the incumbents. If this projection holds it means that only members of the Moonilal slate would get elected along with Warner and Khan, who are both contesting the election as independents.

Moonilal has urged supporters to be vigilant and make sure no member of the Generation Next team wins. Former UNC leader Basdeo Panday is advising the team. Moonilal has predicted that his slate, which does not have a chairman, will win a landslide.
