Coudray says UNC nominated her for Mayor, not COP

Marlene Coudray disagrees with the chairman of her former party that her move to the United National Congress (UNC) can lead to mistrust within the governing People's Partnership and weaken the coalition.

The Mayor of San Fernando has switched from the Congress of the People (COP) and is running for a post of Deputy Leader in Saturday's UNC election. The UNC told reporters that she satisfied all the requirements for the nomination.

The news that she is running for one of the top posts as a member of Roodal Moonilal 'Nationalists' slate has angered COP. The party has accused the UNC of 'poaching' and suggested that Coudray's move will have a negative effect on relations between the two main parties in the coalition.

However Coudray does not share that view. Speaking on national radio Tuesday she said a possible rift "is the furthest thing from the truth."

She added, "My move is a move of conscience and one has had to be led by one's conscience in these issues. And I have been led by my conscience."

She also stated that contrary to a widely held view, the COP did not propose her to be Mayor of San Fernando. She said her nomination for that post was made by the UNC.

"If the COP had proposed me as Mayor, I would never have acted. You know I have severed ties with the COP over two years now and they are very well aware of it. As I said, I am not saying a lot right now. I don't want any bacchanal but a lot of people are being less than honest," she declared.

Coudray ran as a candidate for the COP in San Fernando West in the 2007 general election; Junia Regrello won the seat for the PNM. In 2010 COP nominated Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan for San Fernando West, the constituency she now represents in Parliament.

Coudray was made an Alderman following the July 2010 Local Government Elections and then elected as mayor.
