COP meeting in emergency session ahead of coalition talks Monday

The political leader of the Congress of the People (COP) has summoned all party officials, MPs, councillors and other office holders to an emergency meeting starting at nine on Sunday morning.

Prakash Ramadar wants to discuss the latest developments in the Coudray affair in preparation for the resumption of talks on the matter with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other leaders of the People's Partnership.

The five leaders met last Thursday for four hours without resolving the problem.

Reports say both Persad-Bissessar and Ramadhar are firm in their positions. The COP leader wants Coudray fired and replaced by a COP mayor; the PM is reported to have refused. Local media reports say Ramadhar is expected to brief officials on the discussions and outline his views on the next steps. One report suggested Ramadhar is prepeared to resign over the matter.

Ramadhar has the support on several top members of the party. However, one MP - Anil Roberts - has said Ramadhar's position is unreasonable and declared that his leader doesn't speak for him.

Ramadhar is upset over a decision by San Fernando mayor Marlene Coudray to leave COP and run for a seat on the national executive of the United National Congress (UNC). Coudray won election last Saturday as one of the UNC's three deputy leaders.
