Marlon King - sentenced to death by hanging for killing AMY |
Justice Justice Anthony Carmona handed down the verdict in the San Fernando Supreme Court Thursday afternoon, after a 12-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict. It took two hours for the jury to decide.
Amy Emily Annamunthodo was raped, sodomised, beaten and suffocated at her home at Union Park, Marabella on 15 May 2006. She had been locked in a room with a piece of cloth stuck in her mouth to muffle her screams.
An autopsy revealed death was due to multiple traumatic injuries about the body. There were abrasions in the child's mouth, while her hymen and anus had been ruptured.
AMY - abused and murdered |
Neighbours reported that they saw a woman wrap the child in a white towel and quickly walk away. Moments later they saw a man leaving the house. Amy was pronounced dead at hospital.
Authorities became concerned about the bruises on the body and called in the police. King was later arrested and charged with murder.
Amy's grandmother had provided care for the four year old since her birth but didn't know about the abuse.
"I work all over the place and mind that child. I gave she everything she wanted. I work as a domestic servant for people, and my heart ripping out to know what happened with that child," she told reporters on learning of her grandchild's tragic death.
Amy had been abused all of her life and had at one time become a ward of the state. However her mother and grandmother successfully petitioned a magistrate to regain custody of the child. Once back home, the abuse started again.
One neighbour reported that he witnessed the abuse. Ryan Hernandez told local media, "I saw him pushing her and heard him saying, ‘Get up, girl! I say get up!'"
He remained silent because he was afraid of Amy's violent attacker. Those who remember Amy described her as "an angel" and prayed for "those demons" who killed her to "face punishment at God's hands."
