The chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) told a Parliamentary Committee Friday there are about 9,000 vacancies in the Trinidad &Tobago public service.
He explained that many people are being offered temporary positions while the PSC tries to get permanent employees.
And Christopher Thomas said the PSC is having a very difficult time trying to fill the various positions, primarily because salaries are too low.
Thomas told a Joint Select Committee of Parliament there are other issues that are causing problems.
He said the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is a particular area where it's difficult to find proper staff because engineers are being offered between $5,000 and $6,000 a month. He said to make matters worse job descriptions are not attracting the right personnel.
He explained that many people are being offered temporary positions while the PSC tries to get permanent employees.
Transport Minister Devant Maharaj, who is a member of the committee, challenged Thomas to explain why the temporary workers cannot be made permanent in order to have greater productivity in the service.
Maharaj also expressed concern about the failure of the PSC so far to staff three new Ministries - Transport, Tobago Development, and Gender, Youth and Child Development.
